Where do you look for ___ online? Series: Sofas

One of the reasons why online shopping can be scary is because you don’t always know what vendors to trust.

If you saw it in person, you might not be as freaked out (because you’ll see what you’re actually getting). But online…..how do you know?

Normally, designers might hide where they find things.

But, that's not me.

I’m going to show you the sources to look at when you are searching for _(fill in the blank)_online. After I discussed sofa options here, a few of you mentioned that you wanted to know more about where to look for sofas. So we are going to start with sofas (aka- where all the snuggling happens) in this series.

1. Bryght

Bryght is really making a name for itself these days. By cutting out a lot of the middle men, it is able to offer products WAY cheaper and still just as well made. Oh, and they can deliver your sofa for $50 which is unbeatable and amazing.

2. Interior Define

Interior Define has more modern designs with boxy shapes. What I love about Interior Define is that it is well made, there is free shipping and you can return the sofa up to a YEAR after you purchase it! WHAT?! That's amazing. And it should make you feel extra comfortable in purchasing one of their products.

3. Room and Board

This company is American made and really strives to provide amazing customer service as well as great products. Their sofas are known for being comfortable and their shipping is no more than $129. The biggest part about Room and Board that I love is that they offer the best type of seat cushion- spring down. Most companies don't offer this as an option, but I am thrilled that they do.

4. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams has been on the scene since the 1990's. They make all their sofas in North Carolina and are known for comfort and quality. Not all their products are online, but they have a great mix of styles and offer delivery for less than $150 on each upholstery piece.

5. Lamps Plus

You might be thinking- really? But, yes really! This online retailer has some great sofa options at killer deals. Since it's a larger company, there are a lot of things in stock and ready to ship. They also have a "Low Price Guarantee"...which is always a nice thing to hear :)

6. Design Within Reach

This company is known for it's collaborations with designers and it's well made products. It's not cheap, but these pieces are what we call heirloom. I really like that they go into detail describing the designer's philosophy behind the product. It makes you feel like you are buying a piece of art (which you are!).

7. One Kings Lane

One Kings Lane is a great resource for everything in your home. However, I really like that it has sofas that go across the board in pricing (ranging from $1000- 10,000) and in style. You can find styles that go with just about everything and they have a 2 week return policy.

8. Horchow

There is a reason why this company feels so "fancy". It's because it's owned by Neiman Marcus. And just like it's mama, it carries all the designer options. What is nice about Horchow is that it has sales on their products as well as quickship options (it will arrive within 2 weeks!). If you want to know the brands that designers use that are "to the trade", Horchow has them.

9. Canvas

The special thing about Canvas is it's fabric. It's all handwoven and dyed by the company. It's a characteristic of the company's sustainability philosophy. The drawback to them is that their sofas are final sale...but you do get free shipping!

10. Restoration Hardware

RH is no big secret. The biggest advantage to using Restoration Hardware is that there are lot of styles and they can come in a lot of sizes. So if you have a really large room or small, they can work with it. This is also one of the vendors that you can go see in person.

You may be wondering how you can tell if something is well made- especially if it ALL looks good to you! There are some key words that I would say hold the "secret" behind if something is well made.

The 5 key words to look for when shopping are:

  • "8 way hand tied"
  • "all hardwood frame"
  • "corner blocking"
  • 2.0-3.0 density foam cushions
  • "down cushions" or "spring down cushions"

Each one of these phrases deals with different parts of the sofa and prove if something is well made or not. If they don't have one of these phrases, you aren't getting a dud. They are just markers of a good sofa. So if you see one of these phrases, you are looking at a decent piece.

What are the fears that hold you back from purchasing sofas online? Do you have a favorite source to find sofas?
