Everyone has a different style. If you want your style to look "beautiful" or "rustic" or just like a photo from a magazine, it's not easy to make it your own.
My client's style was elegant and classic. She wanted a room that was sun-filled and elegant and in her words, be "a place where I can bring a drink in with my friends and hang out!".
However, this room was always the last on the list to be touched because it was the room that no one ever went into.
She wanted to incorporate some special pieces that she really loved so here is what had to stay:
- Area Rug
- Antique Fireplace & Mantle
- Antique Sofa & Chair
The most challenging part about the new design was figuring out how to coordinate the existing rug with a new color palate.
That sofa was from the client's grandmother and though she loved it, it had been reupholstered a long time ago and the guys who reupholstered it took out all the feather down in the cushions making it hard to sit on (instead of soft and fluffy!).
What's missing from this photo are the large navy swags that covered a lot of the window and tied into the "Virginia a la 1700's" vibe of the space. (the client took them down right before the photo was taken because she couldn't stand them any longer- I know you've been there.)
This last photo captures the feel of the whole room: Dark. Dated. Unfinished.
But what do you do with a room that you don't normally even go into?
How do you create an inviting space?
Since it's the first room that people see when they walk in, what do you want them to think?
I answered these questions with this design....hope you enjoy!
